Exercise Often

Try to workout for atleast 20 to 30 minutes a day a few times a week. Try not to exercise within 6 hours of trying to go to bed. Exercising before bedtime may interrupt your ability to fall asleep.

Avoid Alcohol, Caffeine, & Nicotine

Avoid drinks that contain caffeine. High caffeinated drinks such as coffee, soda, and energy drinks disrupt your energy levels throughout the day which can cause you to crash later on. This leads to the bad habit of having to take a nap. Avoid or quit smoking if possible. Smokers generally sleep light at night and will often wake up at the slightest sounds.

Do Something Relaxing Before Going To Bed

Try to relax your body before bedtime. Things that can help you relax include taking a warm bath/shower, reading a book, or watching some TV.

Do Not Make the Mistake of Oversleeping

Try your best to set an alarm and wake up at a consistent time. Sleeping in a few days for more hours than you are used to will throw off your sleeping pattern. If you wake up too late, you won’t be tired next night at the time you normally go to bed. You will then go to bed later which results in sleeping in even later the next day.

Control Your Room Temperature

If your room is too hot or too cold, this can cause you to sleep poorly. Try to maintain a comfortable room temperature that won’t aggravate you at night. If it is too cold, you can buy a portable electric heater or purchase a heated blanket. If it is too hot, you can invest in a fan or an air conditioning unit.

When Should I See a Doctor About My Insomnia?

If you continue to develop insomnia for a period longer than a month, you may need to check in with your doctor. Your doctor will be able to give you advice for your particular needs and can prescribe stronger sleeping aides that are not available over the counter in your local drug/convenience store.
